iPad 3 Retina Display versus iPad 2

Published on March 16, 2012 by in Reviews

We’ve always thought that the iPad 2 has such a great and it does, until you compare it with the New iPad which was released today from Apple. With double the resolution and 40% more saturated colors the New iPad makes the iPad 2 display look like horse sh*t. I kid you not, see for yourself in the video below.

My new AlienBees gear!

Published on February 23, 2012 by in Reviews

2 weeks ago I purchased 3 things as an addition to my lighting setup. 2 from Paul C. Buff including an AlienBee B1600 strobe, and a Vagabond Mini battery pack. I also ordered a 48″ Ocotobox (Octagon Softbox) from Fotodiox through Amazon.

I went with the B1600 because my friend Justin Bettman suggested it in order to overpower the sun and fill up all 48 inches of the Octobox. In the studio and in shader parts of the outdoors (forest, alleys, etc.) I haven’t used over 1/2 power so far. The Recycle times are pretty good and I love the cycle feature for the modeling light when shooting in studio. Basically whenever the flash is recycling, the modeling light shuts off and when it comes back on you know that you’re ready to fire again.

You can watch my unboxing of the B1600 here:

I didn’t want to be limited to shooting near an outlet with the AlienBee setup so I had to add a Vagabond Mini to my order. The Vagabond is small and lightweight yet it packs quite a punch. I’ve done 5 shoots with it so far and I’ve only had to recharge it once (other than the first initial charge). After 2 of today’s shoots I’m still above 1/2 capacity. Charging was also very quick with a full battery being ready to go in just under 4 hours. The Vagabond is light enough to carry around on my shoulder without even knowing it’s there. Overall, I’m impressed.

You can watch my unboxing of the Vagabond here:

The 48″ Ocotobox is absolutely terrific for the price! It’s a nice big light source and it gives an amazingly smooth and even light. I found it hard to setup my regular soft boxes at first and I still do, but somehow the Octobox is easier to setup, it takes me just 5 minutes to get the whole setup ready. There are many different sizes of Octobox and they don’t vary all that much in price, but the 48″ is great because it’s small enough to fit through a doorway and in the car (depends on the car, but it did fit in a VW Tiguan with the seats folded down) yet large enough to light a whole set. It also packs up nicely into the included carrying case.

I am extremely happy with what I’ve been able to get out of the new gear in just the past few days. I’ll have more updates up soon, and plenty of behind the scenes photoshoot videos. If you have any questions or things you’d like me to go over in a video or post, let me know with an email or a comment on this post!

Here are some photos that I’ve taken using my these new additions to my lighting gear.

Check out my photoshoot with Andrew Gelman.
