Yongnuo YN-560 First Impressions

Published on September 4, 2011 by in Reviews

Yesterday I received my  YN560 speed light from Amazon. The 560 resembles Canon’s 580EX II in many ways. The build quality is superb for less then $100 and the features are almost exactly those of the 580EX II without the E-TTL functionality. I bought the 560 to use it as a slave along with my Nikon SB-600 and today I had the opportunity to use it in a quick shoot with my friends Gabe, and Daniel. I used a Gary Fong Collapsible diffuser on the SB-600, and the bounce card built which is built in the 560.

For this photo of Gabe, I had the SB-600 in front of the camera to the left, and the YN560 on Gabe’s left.

The 600 was on TTL and the 560 was on 1/4 power.

Two speed lights is all you need.

For this photo I had Daniel, climb into a storm drain, I held the 560 to my left point diagonally at him and my friend held the SB 600 from the top of the entrance to the drain straight at him.

I used the Commander mode for the pop-up flash in the D90 to trigger the strobes.
